A series of midlife upheavals has resulted in James and his wife Carol moving north to Chester. Despite the many changes that have recently disrupted their situation, James convinces himself that he can already see his future, almost predetermined, stretching out before him. Then, quite by chance, he meets Susan and his life, suddenly entangled with her own, accelerates him into an entirely unexpected new direction.
